About the Book
This book is organized
into three sections intended to help boards work through the process of instituting
BoardSteps.
Section 1 consists
of the Introduction, which explains the rationale for the book, discusses
the importance of board governance and sketches the basics of the framework.
Section 2, Practicing
BoardSteps, focuses on the actual process of setting up a governance structure
through identification and pursuit of desired results, essential relationships,
and existing and potential resources.
The process is covered at two distinct levels in six steps:
Section 3, Standards, Worksheets,
and References, addresses the development of standards, presents worksheets
that supplement Section Two, and notes references. The BoardSteps job description
is located at the end of this section.
By consulting the material and worksheets in all three sections of this book, a board can assemble the building blocks of a governance system appropriate to its particular organization.
